A Strong Earthquake Hit Afghanistan

On June 22, 2022, local time, a strong earthquake hit Afghanistan. Local officials: At least 1,000 people have been killed and 1,500 injured.

About 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India felt the tremor, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

Afghanistan is located in a seismo-tectonic region and is located on several geological fault lines, and earthquakes occur frequently. Reuters recalled that the last earthquake with heavy casualties in Afghanistan occurred on March 3 and 25, 2002. Strong earthquakes of magnitude 7.4 and 6.1 occurred in the Hindu Kush region successively, and a total of about 1,100 people were killed. In 1998, the most tragic year, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake and a 6.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in the remote areas of northeastern Takhar Province in February and May of that year, killing at least 2,300 people and 4,700 people respectively. In January this year, successive earthquakes hit western Afghanistan, killing more than 20 people and destroying hundreds of houses.
