A typical pressure gauge movement usually consists of the following key components:
Bourdon tube: The most common type of elastic sensitive element. It is typically a hollow metal tube that is bent into a C-shape, spiral shape, or helical shape. When the pressure inside the tube increases, the tube tends to straighten out, and its end will produce a displacement. This is the "sensor" for the pressure.
Fan-shaped gear/lever mechanism (Movement): This is a set of precise gears and lever systems used to amplify the tiny displacement at the end of the Bourdon tube and convert it into rotational motion of the pointer shaft. It usually includes:
Fan-shaped gear: Connected to the end of the Bourdon tube, it converts the linear displacement into rotational motion.
Center gear (small gear): Coaxial with the pointer, driven by the fan-shaped gear.
Spring: Provides a reverse torque to eliminate the gap between the gears and ensure that the pointer indicates smoothly and without jitter, and helps the pointer return to zero.
Pointer shaft: The shaft that installs the pointer, driven by the center gear.
Dial: The panel with scales, cooperating with the pointer to display the specific pressure value.
Case: Protects the internal movement.
Working principle (brief description)
Pressure input: The measured medium (gas or liquid) enters the Bourdon tube through the interface of the pressure gauge.
Deformation occurs: The pressure causes the Bourdon tube to undergo elastic deformation, and its free end generates displacement. The displacement is proportional to the pressure magnitude.
Displacement amplification and conversion: The displacement at the end of the Bourdon tube is driven by the lever to swing the fan-shaped gear.
Pointer indication: The fan-shaped gear drives the center gear and the pointer shaft to rotate, thereby causing the pointer to shift on the dial, indicating the corresponding pressure value.
Pressure release: When the pressure decreases, the Bourdon tube relies on its elasticity to return to its original state, and the spring helps the gears to reverse and move in the opposite direction, causing the pointer to retreat.
Main types
According to the structure and application of the pressure gauge, the movement also varies:
Ordinary type (radial/axial): The most common type, used for general industrial pressure gauges.
Shock-resistant movement: The movement is usually filled with damping fluid (such as glycerin or silicone oil), or has a buffering mechanism, used for environments with intense vibrations, to protect the pointer and gears, and reduce pointer jitter.
Electric contact pressure gauge movement: On the basis of the ordinary movement, it adds adjustable upper and lower limit electric contact devices. When the pointer reaches the set pressure, it can connect or disconnect the circuit to achieve control or alarm functions.
Diaphragm pressure gauge movement: Used for measuring high viscosity, easily crystallizing or corrosive media. Its "Bourdon tube" is replaced by a diaphragm sealing device, and the medium acts on the diaphragm, transmitting the pressure to the internal ordinary movement through a filling fluid (such as silicone oil).
Common faults and maintenance
Pointer stuck/immobile: May be caused by Bourdon tube blockage, internal foreign matter, gear jamming or excessive wear.
Pointer jitter: Usually caused by damage to the spring, wear of the gears, or dirt, or excessive environmental vibration.
Incorrect indication (large error): May be caused by permanent deformation of the Bourdon tube (overpressure), excessive wear of the gears, or loose pointer.
Pointer not returning to zero: Fatigue or damage of the spring is a common cause.
Leakage: Cracking at the welding point of the Bourdon tube or aging of the sealing components.
